Many of Chapman&#8217;s successes came from innovation. The Lotus 25 was the first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monocoque\">monocoque<\/a>\u00a0chassis in F1, the 49 was the first car of note to use the engine as a stressed member, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_56\">Lotus 56<\/a>\u00a0Indycar was powered by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gas_turbine\">gas turbine<\/a>\u00a0engine and was fitted with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Four-wheel_drive\">four-wheel drive<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_63\">Lotus 63<\/a>\u00a0was the first mid-engined F1 car to race with four-wheel drive, and the 72 broke new ground in aerodynamics.<\/p><p>At the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1973_Spanish_Grand_Prix\">1973 Spanish Grand Prix<\/a>\u00a0T<strong>eam Lotus as a constructor became the first constructor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Formula_One_Grand_Prix_winners_(constructors)#Record_progression\">to achieve 50 Grand Prix victories<\/a>.<\/strong> <strong>Ferrari was the second constructor to do so<\/strong>, having won their first Formula One race in 1951, seven years before Lotus even entered into Formula One as a constructor.<\/p><p>The first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Formula_One\">Formula One<\/a>\u00a0victory for the Lotus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Factory-backed\">works team<\/a>\u00a0came when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Innes_Ireland\">Innes Ireland<\/a>\u00a0won the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1961_United_States_Grand_Prix\">1961 United States Grand Prix<\/a>. A year earlier,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stirling_Moss\">Stirling Moss<\/a>\u00a0had recorded the first victory for a Lotus car at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1960_Monaco_Grand_Prix\">Monaco<\/a>\u00a0in his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_18\">Lotus 18<\/a>\u00a0car entered by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Privateer_(motorsport)\">privateer team<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rob_Walker_Racing_Team\">Rob Walker Racing Team<\/a>.<\/p><p>In 1963, Clark drove the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_25\">Lotus 25<\/a>\u00a0to a remarkable seven wins in the season and won the World Championship. The 1964 title was still for the taking by the time of the last race in Mexico but problems with Clark&#8217;s Lotus and Hill&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Racing_Motors\">BRM<\/a>\u00a0gave it to Surtees in his Ferrari. However, in 1965, Clark dominated again, six wins in his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_33\">Lotus 33<\/a>\u00a0gave him the championship.<\/p><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_78\">Lotus 78<\/a>, and then the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_79\">Lotus 79<\/a>\u00a0of 1978 were extraordinarily successful, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mario_Andretti\">Mario Andretti<\/a>\u00a0winning the F1 World Championship. Lotus attempted to take ground effects further with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_80\">Lotus 80<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_88\">Lotus 88<\/a>. The team developed an all-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carbon-fibre\">carbon-fibre<\/a>\u00a0car, the Lotus 88, in 1981. The 88 was banned from racing for its &#8216;twin chassis&#8217; technology where the driver had separate suspension from the aerodynamic parts of the car. McLaren&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McLaren_MP4\/1\">MP4\/1<\/a>\u00a0beat it as the first all-carbon-fibre car to race. Chapman was beginning work on an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Active_suspension\">active suspension<\/a>\u00a0development programme when he died of a heart attack in December 1982 at the age of 54.<\/p><p>After Chapman&#8217;s death, the racing team was continued by his widow, <strong>Hazel<\/strong>, and managed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Warr\">Peter Warr<\/a>. Midway through 1983 Lotus hired French designer G\u00e9rard Ducarouge and, in five weeks, he built the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renault_F1\">Renault<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turbocharger\">turbo<\/a>\u00a0powered 94T. A switch to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goodyear_Tire_and_Rubber_Company\">Goodyear<\/a>\u00a0tyres in 1984 enabled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elio_de_Angelis\">Elio de Angelis<\/a>\u00a0to finish third in the World Championship, despite the fact that the Italian did not win a race.
